More on Avocados
In the comments on my guacomole recipe, Juti (thanks, Juti!) provided a link to this recipe for an avocado milkshilk on this very cool blog, the Traveler's Lunchbox, written by a gastronome named Melissa.
I just tried the recipe. I can't decide whether it is more aptly described as "heavenly" or "obscenely delicious."
It was also ridiculously easy.
I'm posting the recipe here the way I made it, because I want easy access to it. But you should follow the links and read Melissa's essay about "the secret life of avocados" and check out the rest of her entries as well.
Holly's ever-so-slightly-modified Avocado Milkshake
1 ripe Haas (dark-skinned) avocado, peeled and pitted
1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
1 cup cold milk, more or less depending on thickness desired
several handfuls of ice
a splash of amaretto (Melissa recommends a few drops orange extract, or some vanilla, rum or coffee, but as I didn't have rum or orange extract or brewed coffee and wanted something more exotic than vanilla, I tried a substitution, which worked OK)
Put everything in a blender and blend on high until the ice is chopped fine. Pour in a glass and enjoy.

Good Lord! As if mikshakes didn't have enough calories in them already, now you go and put avocados in the mix?
You'll have to make me one of these.

Avocado Calories. One medium-sized avocado contains about 165 calories. That's less than a couple of one inch cheese cubes.
The oil in avocodo is monounsaturated, meaning it is heart healthy.
And it has other esoteric things like lutein in it that are good for you, too.
I am going to make smoothies today with the last of my avocados, and I will report back as to the results.

One of my blog commenters recently recommended the following avocado recipe and it is heavenly (and easy!). I think it's just perfect for those too-hot-to-eat-real-food days of summer like today
stack some avocado slices on a piece of wheat toast (preferably a really tasty wheat bread, not a squisy supermarket-type)
drizzle avo slices with honey and enjoy :)

I'm so glad you liked the avocado shake! This is the kind of recipe I always bite my nails over, as it's a little 'out there' for some people. But it is good, isn't it?

Melissa, the shake is FABULOUS--I have made three or four since I found the recipe, and I'm craving one right now. But I have also learned how right you were to stress that the avocados must be perfectly ripe--I made a shake with one that was slightly past its prime, and it just wasn't the same.
I've made it with coffee, as you suggested, and vanilla, but I have to say I really like the amaretto--it complements the avocado nicely.
